Using an Atlas

When looking for a new location for a Ski to Sea Race you must first look for a site that has the geographic features that would allow all the legs of the race to occur.

Use an atlas to choose possible sites for a Ski to Sea Race.  You will complete the WHERE IN THE PACIFIC RIM CHART to show which features are available at each site you find in your atlas. From the chart you will be able to choose the best sites to explore further for your final choice. Open the chart and save it to the drive your teacher has chosen for you. Be sure to do all your work on your own saved copy!

  1. As a group look at maps in your atlas that show the Pacific Rim. Find five places that you think have the geographic features needed for the Ski to Sea race.  List the five places you choose on the top line of the chart.
  2. On your chart you will need to research specific characteristics of each place to see if it is a good site for a Ski to Sea Race. Some characteristics have been listed on the chart. Look at the list and add any other characteristics to the left side of the chart that you think would be helpful to consider when choosing a site.
  3. List as many details as you can about the characteristics for each place on the chart. Use both your atlas and the following links to find the information. Write the information on the Pacific Rim Chart you have saved on your own file.
  4. When your chart is complete decide which three sites offer the best choice of geographic features to host a Ski to Sea race. Highlight the name of your final three choices on your chart.
  5. Save your chart as directed by your teacher.
  6. Remember that when you see the stop sign it is time to print and save your work.
  7. Give your printed work to your teacher.
