Wade King Elementary School was honored to host Burlington-Edison High School’s Baile Folklórico for a special assembly on Friday, October 31.
Baile Folklórico is Spanish for “folk dances” or “dances of the people” and incorporates styles from Indigenous and European cultures.
The group is a dance club led by students at Burlington-Edison High School. High school students meet after school to learn and explore vibrant dances from different regions of Mexico.
For Friday’s assembly, a short introduction explained the significance of Día de los Muertos before performances from Baile Folklórico.
Día de los Muertos spans November 1 and 2 as families celebrate loved ones who have passed with many traditions. These include welcoming loved one’s souls by creating ofrendas with marigold flowers, photos and their favorite dishes. Another is decorating faces like calaveras (smiling skulls) to celebrate life and memory.
Baile Folklórico performed dances from three regions. One of the three was a candle dance from Veracruz, a special symbolic dance honoring Día de los Muertos. The performances were dedicated to honor loved ones.
