Some of Bellingham Public Schools’ youngest learners connected with some of the district’s eldest learners as the Bellingham High School Showstoppers hosted a special choir performance for students at the Early Learning Center on Tuesday, December 16.
The Showstoppers, donning red and black performance outfits, shared several songs with two classes of early learning students who attend school daily at the Early Learning Center (ELC), located at the District Office.
The ELC serves preschools students with teaching and childcare provided by BPS staff, led by teachers Sheila Clark and Renee Haskell.
Before performing, choir director Connie Campbell asked the early learners to hold up hands sharing ages (three and four years old) before asking the high school students to raise hands to indicate their ages (16, 17 and 18 years old). It was a special moment of connection and juxtaposition of the wide range of students served within Bellingham Public Schools.
“The Showstoppers always love to get out and perform for the community, and they especially love to sing for younger kids," Campbell said.
Campbell introduced and shared a bit about each song for the audience of staff students and staff, seated on the floor in a conference room near the ELC. Before one song, a member of The Showstoppers showed the early learners a drum that had been received as a gift when the high school student was even younger than the young audience members.
The conclusion of each song was met with enthusiastic applause and cheers from the audience.
“Our students were mesmerized by the performance, and shared their enthusiasm by clapping and swaying to the beat, while smiling some of the biggest smiles we've seen this school year,” Clark said.
The early learners were also invited to participate during a rendition of Jingle Bells – standing in a circle holding hands with high school counterparts.
“Our students were thrilled when I told them we were going on a ‘field trip’,” Haskell said. “They were in awe of the big kids and expressed genuine joy as they listened to and participated in the songs. Thank you, BHS Showstoppers!”
Following the ELC performance, The Showstoppers also sang for the District Office staff from the upper level common area, drawing staff from their office desks to take in the performance.
"We always like to perform for District Office as a way to say thank you to the wonderful people who support our teachers every day," Campbell said.
