FBLA students compete nationally in Anaheim

Seven students from Sehome and Squalicum high schools represented Bellingham Public Schools at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference, held June 29 – July 2 in Anaheim, California.

Sehome Class of 2025 graduate Parker Norman placed 10th in Computer Game and Simulation Programming, becoming the second-ever national placer from Sehome. Reaching the national conference is no small feat, as students qualify to compete nationally after advancing through regional and state events.

More students qualified for the national event than were able to attend.

Norman was joined by Class of 2025 graduate Ellis Hawkins (Healthcare Administration) and junior Lucy Mu (Introduction to Marketing Concepts) as national qualifiers who were able to attend and compete for the Mariners. Four Squalicum students made the trip with senior Chloe Putney (Business Ethics), senior Natalie Ravitsky (Business Ethics), senior Berkeley Davis (Digital Animation) and sophomore Harshan Grewal (Parliamentary Procedure) each competing for the Storm.

In addition to their respective category events, students attended workshops, heard from keynote speakers, met new people and even visited Disneyland. While networking with many peers, BPS students were able to trade state pins with other states and territories.

Jenny Styer advises the Sehome team while Jessica Smith advises Squalicum. Styer and Cathy Lo Davis, parent of Berkeley Davis, chaperoned the students on the national trip.

The FBLA teams expressed gratitude for funding support via the Career & Technical Education program budget, a grant and private donation that made the trip possible for students and accompanying adults.

FBLA is the largest business Career and Technical Student Organization in the world, with more than 230,000 members spanning middle school, high school and college. Its mission is for students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences. Learn more on the FBLA website.
