Fun evening of soccer in the sun punctuates season’s end at annual Unified Soccer Jamboree

Bellingham Public Schools welcomed schools from across Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties in hosting the annual Unified Soccer Jamboree on Wednesday, May 21 at Bellingham High School. 

All together, 14 teams played concurrently across seven fields with each team scheduled for three games during the jamboree. 

Wednesday’s jamboree had One Schoolhouse spirit from a BPS perspective, with Bellingham, Sehome, Squalicum, Fairhaven, Kulshan and Shuksan all participating. 

The BPS schools were joined by Ferndale, Lynden, Arlington, Lakewood, Mount Vernon, Burlington-Edison, Laurel Valley Harbor Trojaneerites (Meridian, Nooksack Valley and Blaine combined team) and a BPS staff team. 

Local food, drink and treat trucks Kona Ice, Grounded in Life Coffee, Tacos El Tule and Cicchitti’s East Coast Pizza were each on hand during the jamboree. 

“A big thank you to our coaches for countless hours of dedication and hard work, which led to a successful and memorable unified soccer season,” Bellingham Public Schools Director of Athletics and Activities James Hayes said. “Your commitment and passion have truly made a difference.” 

BPS is grateful for community support of voter-approved levies and bonds, which make events such as the Unified Soccer Jamboree possible.  

Past bond measures have allowed BPS to turf and enhance our high school campuses’ athletic fields, which allow us to serve as one of very few school districts who can host events of this magnitude. Local levies fund athletics and activities opportunities for students. Unified sports are also supported by donations through the Bellingham Public Schools Foundation, which had an informational table at the event. 

Unified sports are a part of Special Olympics. Unified sports combine Special Olympics athletes with partners to make for a great team experience.
