Whatcom READS author Javier Zamora visits Bellingham High |
“Solito” author Javier Zamora recently spoke with students at Bellingham High School as part of the Whatcom READS annual author visit.
Zamora, who was born in El Salvador, talked candidly about his traumatic experience of crossing the Mexico/U.S. border in 1999, detailed in his memoir, which many students read as part of lessons in English Language Arts, Spanish and/or Latinos in Action classes in our high schools. Read more...
Geneva kindergarten turns PNW rain into a splashy art lesson |
Bracing for the rain that will arrive this week? We could ask for advice from kindergarten students who know all about how to prepare for this windy, rainy and wild weather ahead! Rainboots, raincoats and umbrellas make up the subject of the Rainy Day artwork currently on display at Geneva Elementary School.
According to kindergarten teacher Mikel Panagos, the art project “was created to celebrate the rainy days of the approaching spring especially since we weren’t getting any snow this year!” Read more...
Scratch-made sausages in the Central Kitchen a hit in school cafeterias |
Late last year, the Central Kitchen of Bellingham Public School was busy one morning with all stages of sausage-making.
This batch of sausages was then heated up for the popular breakfast-for lunch-entrée of French toast with scratch-made berry sauce, the pork sausages, alongside the always present salad bar.
This is just one of the many scratch-cooked recipes produced out of the district’s kitchen on a regular basis. Read more...
The Bellinghome Battle is more than a game |
There are many traditions and special moments across our school district each year. One such occasion is the annual Bellinghome Battle between Bellingham High and Sehome High.
The 2026 edition took place on Thursday, Jan. 29 with a varsity basketball doubleheader at Sehome High School. A full house of fans packed the gym with energy and school spirit to witness the friendly competition. Read more...
"Creativity and community" on display during BFPP art exhibition |
To end their session in Explorations in Art in fall 2025, 20 students in grades 3 to 6 in the Bellingham Family Partnership Program (BFPP) invited their families and friends to an exhibition of their creations.
Ahead of the exhibition hour, a flurry of activity took over the space as the students put finishing touches on their art, continued to hang pieces on stacked boxes innovatively used as a multi-sided display, and finished the Explorations in Art collaborative sign. Read more...
Birchwood roundtable: students feel safe, heard and cared for |
Bellingham Public Schools board of directors, executive team and Superintendent Greg Baker met with a group of students from Birchwood Elementary School earlier this school year.
At Birchwood, students say schooll is a place where friends, teachers and staff make them feel safe, heard and truly cared for.
They shared with the board that they’re proud of their learning, love seeing their friends every day and appreciate how everyone looks out for one another. Read more...
