Dear families of middle school students,
We think it is great that so many of our middle school students attend football games at Civic Stadium to cheer on our high school teams, connect with their friends and show school spirit.
The next few weekends have some big games for our high schools, and we know lots of students may be planning to attend. We need your help to keep these community events safe and enjoyable for all.
Recently, we have seen an increase of disruptive behavior from unsupervised students.
Please partner with us to remind our middle school students of the following:
- School rules and district policies are in effect at Civic, just like at school. This means that actions at Civic can result in conversations and/or discipline at school.
- Treat peers and other spectators with care and respect. Be mindful of how your actions affect others and avoid behavior that is distracting or disruptive to other fans.
- We encourage students and other fans to watch the game from the spectator stands and to avoid gathering in or obstructing other areas, like the concession stand or walkways.
- Please respond to adult event supervisors (typically wearing orange coats and/or Bellingham Public Schools employee badges) in a respectful and cooperative manner.
Here is a little more information for families about these public, community events at Civic:
- Spectators have in-and-out privileges during the game. Make sure your middle schooler understands your family’s expectations about whether they are able to leave the stadium during the event; for example, to visit 7-Eleven.
- There is adult supervision and security present at the game; however, this supervision is different than during a school day. We rely heavily on students to make good choices and follow expectations independently.
- Events at Civic are different from events we host at our middle schools. We still ask families to attend middle school events with their kids and supervise them.
We highly encourage families to attend events at Civic with their middle schooler to cheer on the Bayhawks, Mariners and Storm, and thank you in advance for making sure they understand what we expect at these fun community events and how to represent our community well.
